On June 19th, at the monthly Township meeting, Chief Toomey recognized and commended Officer Shea Johnson for the following incident: On May 3, 2017 Officer Johnson responded to a resident’s home after receiving a report of a male that threatened two other men with a machete. Upon his arrival, he heard screaming coming from the rear of the home. Officer Johnson moved towards the rear of the home and encountered a male holding a large machete. The male ignored his orders to drop the weapon and ran into the home through a rear door. Officer Johnson pursued the male inside the home and began searching for him. The male then suddenly appeared from a room and was within striking distance, still holding the machete. Officer Johnson continuously shouted commands for the male to drop the machete while aiming his service hand gun at him. As the male continued to ignore his commands, Officer Johnson retrieved his Taser from its holster and fired it, rendering the male incapable of further resistance. The male was then taken into custody. Officer Johnson’s processional and brave conduct, coupled by quick reaction to a dangerous situation and demonstrating extraordinary restraint, brought a dangerous person into custody without harm to him or other persons.
